Iconicity, Photographic Aesthetics, and Implicit Partnership: Stein and Toklas, Sontag and Leibovitz

Confronting the “problem of the closet,” Brooke’s thesis analyses the photographs of two iconic duos of women: Susan Sontag and Annie Leibowitz, on the one hand, and Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas, on the other. Brooke shows us how these women’s queerness can be read in and through their relationship to the medium of photography that made them into icons.
