“The Future is Fertile: Exploring How Young Trans People Think About Reproduction”

Faculty Advisor: Kristen Schilt

Max Grayzel-Ward’s thesis explores transmasculine and transfeminine people’s relationship to reproduction, where reproduction encompasses both child-bearing and raising. Drawing on data collected in 23 qualitative interviews with college-aged trans-masculine and transfeminine individuals, Max examines the barriers - social, institutional, and embodied - that shapes trans people’s relationship to reproduction. If the capacity to have children - be they biological, adoptive, or otherwise - is a definitive and important moment in many people’s lives, Max shows us how trans individuals encounter barriers to that experience, despite their formal inclusion in American society.
