José Morin
“Exploring the Closet: Reconceptualizing Machismo through Masculinity and
Queer Disruption”
Faculty Advisor: Kristen Schilt
José Morin’s thesis examines how queer-identifying, U.S. born, Latinx sons of immigrants navigate the gendered notions of masculinity that are often prevalent in their communities. Drawing on interviews with 15 participants, José shows how individuals mobilize their autonomy to reconceptualize machismo as form of hybrid masculinity. In particular, José focuses on how queer-identifying people navigate experiences of coming out, questions of gender-presentation, and sexual identity within and outside of their communities.
