Imaan Yousuf’s thesis puts forward a critical literary analysis of Carmen Machado’s In the Dream House: A Memoir (2019). Grounding her project in literary studies of genre and queer theory, Imaan’s project tracks the ways in which Machado’s novel pushes up against the limitations of the genre of memoir-writing itself. Imaan deftly traces how the memoir at once fails to adequately represent the particular nature of the queer harm Carmen seeks to narrate, and, at the same time, shows us how Machado the author overextends herself to maintain a vision of queer solidarity.
