JQ’s thesis is a qualitative study of how young adults understand and experience the phenomenon of “defining the relationship.” Their research draws on interviews to demonstrate how “defining the relationship,” as a type of “relationship talk,” is not simply about the relationship itself, but for queer people, is also bound up with the exploration of self and identity.
